History
One of the most incredible California historical sites! The Union Hotel was originally built in 1880… A charming blend of Old West and Victorian.
Few places in California have such a long tradition of hosting visitors as does the Union Hotel. For over 130 years the Hotel has hosted travelers from the stagecoach, then the railroad, then early motorists, on the original highway 101.
Back in the 1920’s, movie stars, on their way to Hearst Castle, stopped by to refill their flasks. In the early 50’s you might find Johnny Cash or Buck Owens (before they were famous) playing downstairs in the saloon.
We have a musical history too!
- Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson filmed the video “Say, Say, Say” in the Union Hotel.
- Jon Bonjovi filmed his, “Bang A Drum” here with Chris LaDeaux
- Johnny Cash used to play in what is now the dining room in the 50’s, early in his career
- Jimmy Messina has held his Songwriters Workshops here
The Union Hotel at that time was what was known as a roadhouse, on the original hwy 101 (they improved the hwy and moved it 1/4 mile west)
We provide tradition and we value the past in a magical, romantic setting that appeals to all ages, 8 to 108!
